Every now and again I will be inspired to share something. I have my "In My Fabulous Opinion" blog where I post my reviews for the different shows I enjoy watching. I think basically my family and maybe one or two friends actually read it. Just the same, there are things that I think of during the day or experiences that I figured I'd share separately....
I hereby introduce: WHAT'S ON MY FABULOUS MIND!
This evening, I am staying home from church because my girlie has a migraine. I'm guessing it's from all of the sledding that they did in the cold air & the bright sun. Sun glaring on snow into ones eyes: not a good combination!! So, I told her to sit back, have some aspirin & mom will make you some tea!
Like any other Facebook junkie, I wrote it as my status, "Is going to have a spot of tea with Katherine." One of the first responses was from my friend, James which posted, "Pip pip cheerio..." to which I responded; "..and Bob's your uncle!!.."
After that, I had a myriad of expressions that I like & dislike pop into my head!!
I have actually used, "And Bob's your uncle" before and have had people look at me funny! It's an oooooold Irish expression meaning "and that's how it's done" or "and there you go"
Here's an example of it in use:
To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you take two slices of bread. On one slice you spread the peanut butter like this.... on the other slice you spread the jelly like this... then you put the two slices together like this.....AND BOB'S YOUR UNCLE!
Now, I sense people reading this and are wondering at what age I was dropped on my head. I come from a family of readers. Reading opens up your mind to a lot of words, expressions, and wit. Where else would we get, "Elementary my dear Watson!" but none other than Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries. (Yes there are MANY Sherlock Holmes books, of which I have read them all!) I know I've mentioned it before, but I really like the movie S.H. movie they just came out with - it was pretty spot on if you ask me. I want to see it again, but I can't find anyone!! Anyone want to go??? Or do I need to be one of those sad, pathetic losers who sit in the back corner by themselves stuffing their face in the dark?
Back on track!
Of course, there ARE many expressions that can be derived from movies such as, "Ya savvy?" (Pirates of the Caribbean) But that's a whole other blog!! I did that one a couple of years ago and a lot of people got a kick out of it and really participated. I'll get it going again soon.
Some expressions are used in greetings. One I use often and really need to cut back on because it's getting obnoxious in my own head: "Hi Terry! How are you?" I respond, "JUST DUCKY!" I use it because an old timey Mainer friend who passed away a year or two ago used to say it. Another friend of mine responds, "Oh...I'm alive and kickin'!" I suppose it's much better than going on a 10 minute monologue on my grandmother's goiter.
Another personal favorite of mine is one I use when I am punishing or stating the seriousness of something...
"If you don't stop hitting your brother so help me I'm going to bust you in the head!! So let it be written, so let it be done, world without end, Amen!!"
another I use:
"I've said my piece and counted to three"
One that I use often...compliments of my awesome Italian Mamma:
"I have too many pencils in my head!" Translation: I have too much on my mind.
There are quite a few which REALLY get on my nerves!!!!
One in particular: If a person bumps into someone causing them to spill their hot coffee all over their soon to be father-in-law....what should be said:
"I am so sorry!! Are you okay? Let me help clean this up!!"
No, instead people just say: "My bad."
My bad? No apology? Talk about a brush-off!!
One that's kind of annoying, but it does make you think and keeps you on your toes is the; "That's what she said" response. I don't have a tendency to think like a skeevy perv, so I don't bother with that one.
I have a ton of others, but I'll leave off there. I'd love to hear YOUR favorite/non favorite expressions!!
What's on YOUR fabulous mind??
Well, we always have our Daddy's sayings-
ReplyDeleteRachel is always quoting Grampa's
"Take a chance, Columbus did"
Love reading your rantings and thoughts Ter!
Love you more!
Awww...I love you too!!! <3
ReplyDeleteOh boy...there are sooooo many daddy sayings!! We should write a book!! :P
Another mom one that just popped into my head is, "Not a fly goes through her nose!" Remember that one?? She has all of these ones that have to do with the head cavity!
I thought of another one that the kids and I do...it's a quote from Phineas and Ferb - a Disney channel show - the kids will go up to another and say, "Wha'cha dooooooin?"
And let's not forget the now infamous: "Goodbye Daisy...I'm gonna miss you because we live very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very (infinity) far away! :'(
